You’ve Got This!

encouragement purpose support Sep 16, 2025

Last weekend my husband and I had the honor of “crewing” for his son’s Mogollon Monster 100-mile competitive trail run in northern Arizona.  We had assisted him before, including his previous 62-mile run, and learned a little too late a number of crucial lessons.  During that run he experienced major knee pain and wondered if he'd be able to continue.  I immediately went into my default worry mode, feverishly Googling his symptoms and self-diagnosing him with a major torn meniscus, requiring immediate surgery and heaven knows how many months of recovery!

We soon found out what he really needed was positive encouragement that might have sounded something like this:

“Just focus on getting to the next aid station - you can do that!”
“You’ve got this - don’t even think of giving up now!”
“You didn’t come this far to only come this far!” (a personal favorite - a framed plaque in my office!)
“You’ve trained for months - you know how to do this!”

This time around we were prepared, and when he inevitably experienced intense pain, hallucinations (normal for lack of sleep and this level of extreme physical exertion) along with massive fatigue, we surrounded him with verbal and energetic encouragement.  It was obviously an exhausting and overwhelming experience for him, but the rewards of successfully completing such an extraordinary mental and physical challenge was beyond anything we could have imagined.  His training, determination, courage and fortitude kept him going to the exhilarating finish line!

I find similarities in the type of strength and encouragement needed as we pursue our dreams - that deep, soul-aligned purpose we’re drawn to fulfill in our lifetime.  Our minds and ego tell us there’s no need to get out of our comfort zone, make any major changes, or imagine we can do something new and different that might end up in failure.  Why rock the boat - even if it appears to be sinking?!

The journey to our true soul's purpose may not always feel easy.  We oftentimes need to move through some deep discomfort, face myriad fears and search for sincere support, but above all, we need to recognize and trust our own inner knowing - that innate wisdom, the still small voice that says:

“You know you’re not where you’re meant to be and you’re not doing what you’re meant to be doing - don’t settle just because it’s familiar!”
“You know there’s a better path for you - buckle up and get moving!”
“You’re playing small and just afraid to express your brilliant light - you were made for this new adventure!”.

No matter what, keep going, keep believing in yourself and your purpose, and never let anyone’s voices (especially your own) keep you from the finish line!
