The Gift of Perspective
Nov 11, 2025
I was recently on a call with a potential client and experienced a bit of a world shift.
This woman had been a successful advertising director in Ukraine until she and her husband felt compelled to flee their war-torn country. Now, living in another part of Europe and attempting to start over, her world has turned upside down.
ALL political issues aside, hearing her story - what she’s endured and how she continues to move forward - impacted me on a level I didn’t see coming. Through her tears here are a few of the things she spoke about:
-
Leaving her family and friends and not knowing from day to day if they’re safe. Frequent power outages make regular communication difficult, not to mention the constant worry of missiles and bombings
-
Starting over in a new country where even good English skills don’t compensate for differences in local dialects and phrases, making it challenging to communicate clearly in business, much less develop friendships
-
Starting new jobs and sometimes experiencing discrimination based on political viewpoints
-
Dealing with the grief and trauma of leaving not just a home, but an entire life that once felt secure and permanent
This one conversation has stayed with me and for that I’m grateful. I realize how incredibly blessed I am, but so often I take those blessings for granted.
-
The safety of my home, family and friends is reasonably assured. Yes, there are the normal everyday concerns, but there’s not an underlying daily fear for our lives
-
My basic needs are met; I’m not financially desperate. In fact, I’m able to work on a business that truly fulfills my soul and aligns with my deeper sense of purpose
-
Like many of us, I’ve experienced my share of grief and disappointment; however, I’m not dealing with the anguish of fleeing my home country, leaving family and friends behind
-
And while living in this uncertain world can be challenging at times, I’m able to lean into my spiritual faith and know that everything will somehow be OK
The truth is, the things that hold me back - my fears, doubts, and excuses - are really nothing compared to what others might be facing. The obstacles that once felt so big now seem insignificant in the light of this perspective.
So when life feels heavy or uncertain, I hope you can pause and remember the bigger picture and all of your own many blessings. You are much stronger, safer and more capable than you might realize. And maybe that awareness can awaken something inside - a renewed commitment to live more fully, love as deeply as possible and step into the purpose that only you can fulfill.
The world needs your light, right now, exactly as you are.
I’d love to know your thoughts and reactions, so please email me if you’re so guided. We are so much stronger together, and sharing our stories and perceptions is a powerful way to begin!
Blessings,
Kathy
